What is PM Surya Ghar?
PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a central government scheme launched in 2024 that provides direct financial subsidy to Indian households installing rooftop solar systems. The goal is 1 crore solar rooftops across India. In Karnataka, BESCOM is the implementing utility for Bengaluru.
The subsidy is not a loan or a discount — it's a direct bank transfer from the Government of India to your Aadhaar-linked bank account after your solar system is installed and inspected.
How much subsidy do you get?
| System size | Subsidy amount | Subsidy per kW |
|---|---|---|
| 1 kW | ₹30,000 | ₹30,000/kW |
| 2 kW | ₹60,000 | ₹30,000/kW |
| 3 kW | ₹78,000 | ₹26,000/kW (blended) |
| 4 kW | ₹78,000 | Capped at ₹78,000 |
| 5 kW | ₹78,000 | Capped at ₹78,000 |
The subsidy is ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW, then ₹18,000 per kW for the third kW. For systems above 3 kW, the subsidy is capped at ₹78,000 regardless of size. This means 3 kW is the sweet spot for subsidy efficiency.
Who is eligible?
- Indian citizen with a residential electricity connection (BESCOM, in Bengaluru's case).
- Roof ownership or access — independent house owners qualify directly. Apartment residents need roof access rights and society approval.
- Aadhaar-linked bank account — mandatory for subsidy credit.
- No previous solar subsidy — one subsidy per residential BESCOM consumer number.
- Grid-connected system — off-grid and hybrid systems don't qualify.
Documents you'll need
- BESCOM electricity bill (for consumer number and address proof)
- Aadhaar card (for identity and bank account linking)
- PAN card
- Bank account details (must be Aadhaar-linked)
- Passport-size photograph
- Property ownership proof (for independent houses) or society NOC (for apartments)
Step-by-step application process
- Register on the national portal (pmsuryaghar.gov.in) using your BESCOM consumer number and mobile number linked to Aadhaar.
- Apply for feasibility through the portal. BESCOM reviews your application and checks grid capacity in your area.
- BESCOM issues feasibility approval — typically 2–3 weeks in Bengaluru.
- Choose an empanelled vendor (like Bengaluru Solar) and get the system installed.
- Upload installation details — photographs, panel serial numbers, inverter details, and commissioning report on the portal.
- BESCOM inspection — a BESCOM engineer visits to verify the installation and commission the net meter.
- Subsidy disbursement — after BESCOM uploads the inspection report, the central government processes the subsidy. The money lands directly in your Aadhaar-linked bank account within 30–45 days.
"The process sounds complicated on paper. In practice, when you work with an empanelled installer who handles steps 1–6 for you, your only job is to share your documents once and wait for the money to arrive."
Common questions about PM Surya Ghar
Can I apply if I live in an apartment?
Yes, if your housing society approves and you have roof access. You'll need a society NOC letter. We help draft these.
Is the subsidy taxable?
No. The PM Surya Ghar subsidy is not considered income. It's a government incentive and is not taxable under current income tax rules.
What if I already have solar panels?
If you received a subsidy under a previous scheme (like the MNRE Phase II subsidy), you're not eligible again. If you installed solar without any subsidy, you may be eligible — check with your BESCOM division office.
How long does the entire process take?
From application to subsidy in your bank: 6–10 weeks in Bengaluru. BESCOM feasibility takes 2–3 weeks. Installation is 1–2 days. Net meter commissioning adds 1–2 weeks. Subsidy disbursement takes 30–45 days after inspection.
